Get someone to dress up in a turtle (of death) costume. No technology, bluescreens or CG required.
A scene in my new movie requires a charachter to be fighting a 7 foot turtle (of death).
An suggestions on how to do this? Bear in mind we are crippled by a lack of technology (mini panasonic dv for shooting, windows movie maker/mgi for editing)
I'm sure someone will say 'bluescreen', but i dont actually know exactly what that means, or how/if i can do that?

Since Movie Maker provides no possibilities for making advanced special FX (last time i checked), I guess you'll just have to get a 7 foot turtle (of death) or dress up like one.
This sounds like it's going to be fun to film!
If I were doing it I'd probably try to acheive it using creative camera work and maybe one or two blue/green screen shots (all this does is allow you to put a person who is backdropped by a 'blue' screen in front of footage shot elsewhere to make it look like he is in that scene, they only use blue because it's doesn't ocur as naturally as other colours and so is easy to eliminate from a shot).
Anyhoo, I would probably opt for the Turtle suit, but would be careful not show the suit in it's entirity, as on my budget it's bound not to look too good. I'd keep the shot dark to disguise the turtle in shadow. I'd also try to make sure the camera was always looking up at the turtle and down on the guy when they are in individual shots or when the guy is in front of the turtle in the shot. I'd also use fast cuts for attcking swipes and blows and a few facial closeups as well as body parts clashing! One shot I'd do on the green screen (unless you're using someone who is 7ft tall!) is to have the turtle rise above the guy when standing up, making it look like the larger than life, fearsome creature I'd imagine it to be.
Man, I wish I was doing this now!!!
Definitely storyboard this scene as it will allow you to visualise the scenes better before you film it on the day. You may have thought of all the above already, but I just thought it would be a cool thing to do and eneded up writing all of the above. If you want to story board it but can't find anyone to do it I'd definitely like to do this scene!

however you film it i hope its sposed to be a comedy since its gunna look terrible.
This turtle wouldnt know kung fu by any chance?
Barring negative comments about production quality, the a costume is the best way to go.
Years ago, we did a movie that required a monster to pop out of the ground and attack people at the end of the movie (ahem... a bit like the graboids from Tremors). The framework for the head was 2x4's, chicken wire, and papier mache. It even had tentacles that shot out of the mouth that were made of foam pipe insulators with trashbags ironed onto them. The final head was about 5 feet long and 3 feet wide.

Looking back, we came up with something half-decent for not a lot of money (maybe $60 till you factor in the cost of the spray paint). Since it sounds like the turtle will be the show piece for your project, take your time and carefully plan out how you're going to build it.
Oh, and after you get everything wrapped up, posts some pictures!
Do it forced pespective.
I doubt that will help the quality of the turtle
though, which is bound to be wretchid if you've
got no money and no experience in such things.
